One Man’s Trash – Full Episode
Capt. David Salazar of Casa Vieja Lodge joins Rush and Ali in Rush’s home waters of the Florida Keys. The Local Knowledge crew takes David to tap some of the current fishing opportunities. One of those seasonal fisheries is “shrimp boat fishing” where one man’s trash truly is another man’s treasure in the form of bait!
Capt. Rush Maltz explains, “Shrimp boat fishing is a ton of fun because of the variety of species that gather behind the shrimp boats as they work their catch. The action gets red hot as you try and catch your desired species out of the frenzy of many species that gather to feed behind the boats. The shrimp boat by-catch is the source of all this excitement. I guess its true that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”
Using shrimp boat chum to match the hatch, the boys catch a wide variety of gamefish behind the boats.
They also spend some time fishing the reefs and wrecks that create the fishing mecca in the Keys. Yellowtail snapper, amberjack, mutton snapper and grouper frequent the reefs and respond to the chum.
“A big part of what I love about fishing here is the fact that you never know what is going to bite next. I don’t mind eating most of them too. They are delicious”, said Ali Hussainy.
